A few months before graduating from high school, I came
across an article that was a commencement speech that a guy gave to a graduating
senior class. He told the students to
not be anxious to grow up. Not in a
childish, immature way but to not be anxious and rush going out on your own. He told them to enjoy the short time that
they are dependent on their parents, because they will have the rest of their
lives to be independent. He said travel
and experience and then be responsible.
I took it to heart. I went on as
many trips as I could. I lived in
Russia, in China, in Japan. Went to
Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico. I
had experiences that I would never be able to do as a “responsible” adult, I
met people, I made memories, I played. I
am so grateful that I read that speech.
I am so glad I took it to heart.
I am grateful that he gave me permission to create a part of me that I
will always treasure.
